Since the UFO Design-Driven Layout System is based on highly integrated logical and physical database models, specified electrical connectivity is enforced within the physical representation. LVS and ERC errors are eliminated or greatly minimized.
G.U.F.I.
Unlike traditional GUI's which often have "Computer Against Design" roadblocks, GUFI (Graphical User Friendly Interface) provides a true "Computer Aided Design" environment in which the computer actually follows the designer's logical thought processes and provides its powerful and accurate services. Imagine: no more fighting complicated menu hierarchies or memorizing convoluted key bindings.
Cat & Hat

With their speed and accuracy, modern computers are indispensable in solving many scientifically oriented problems. In many real life situations ( especially those that involve artistic elements ), however, computers often seem to be helplessly flawed when compared to humans. This fundamental difference demands that the CAD tools be designed such that humans and computers are compliment each other. Unfortunately, the traditional CAD tools do just the opposite.

For example, in critical full-custom layout environments, humans are forced to do polygon-pushing while the powerful computer stands by idling most of the time. Being very slow and notoriously error-prone, humans are simply not fit to perform such Computer Appropriate Tasks. The time-to-market problem in these environments is the direct result of such a gross task misappropriation between humans and computers.

On the other hand, in performing pattern recognition functions such as critical placement and routing, the artistically inclined humans do much better than computers. They, however, have been excluded from these tasks in practically all automation tools. Instead, these Human Appropriate Tasks are assigned to the computers. The consequences are excessive die size and poor circuit performance.

Thus, it is clear that in the CAD environment, there are two distinctly different classes of tasks: CAT ( Computer Appropriate Tasks ) and HAT ( Human Appropriate Tasks ). The efficiency of a CAD tool depends heavily on how well these two classes of tasks are appropriated between the human and the computer. Any misappropriations would create extreme inefficiency as in the traditional CAD environment. These misappropriations and the flawed GUI system are the major reasons why the conventional CAD tools have become “Computers Against Design” tools that all the designers have been forced to live with.

Cat&Hat (Computer Appropriate Tasks & Human Appropriate Tasks) allows proper task appropriation so that the slow and error-prone process of "polygon pushing" (classified as Computer Appropriate Tasks) is now handled by the computer. Critical decisions requiring a designer's intelligence and experience are left to humans (Human Appropriate Tasks).

The combination of Gufi and Cat&Hat greatly improves design efficiency rendering IC Mask design a truly fun and enjoyable experience.
